There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is banned. Eight casinos are anchored in a generally tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many borders.

The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, contains 150 slots and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel compound that highlights many comforts aside from the gambling den, which provides 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
