There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many borders.

The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that features many amenities on top of the gambling den, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 gaming tables.
