There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.

The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling den, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that contains numerous conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
